Temporary Breakdown Cover

Some providers offer temporary breakdown cover so you don’t have to take out a policy for a whole year if you’re not going to be using your car for that long.

Temporary breakdown cover

If you have a car but are only planning on using it for a few days or weeks over the year you may want to purchase breakdown cover just for that amount of time. Temporary breakdown cover can let you select how long your cover will last for; each provider may have their own minimum and maximum insurance duration so it is worth shopping around to find a policy that fits your trip.

It may also be wise to see how much an annual policy could cost you however, if you frequently purchase temporary breakdown cover or will be using it for an extended experience it could well be that it works out cheaper to buy breakdown cover for an entire year, even if you would not be needing it for that entire time.

Levels of cover

Different providers of temporary breakdown insurance may differ what their policy includes, other may let you purchase different levels of insurance so you can tailor yourself exactly what you are covered for. These levels may differ between providers but could include:

  • Roadside: Roadside cover is often the cheapest and most minimal level of cover. It usually means that if your vehicle has a breakdown you will provided with a set period of free roadside labour from a mechanic and if they cannot fix your vehicle there and then, then they will provide a tow to a nearby garage.
  • Home assistance: The basic roadside package offered by many insurers tends to exclude cover if your vehicle won’t start when leaving your home, or if it breaks down within a certain distance of your home address. If you want your policy to cover these incidences then you will need a policy that includes a home assistance package.
  • Recovery:  Some providers give you the option of purchasing a national recovery package, this means if your car can’t be fixed at the side of the road instead of just being taken to the closest garage where the break down has occurred you get the option of; you, your vehicle and any passengers being taken to any single location of your choice anywhere in the UK.
  • Onward Travel: With onward travel if you’re vehicle can’t be repaired within a certain time frame then your provider may be able to offer you with alternative options to continue your travels. This might include a courtesy car, or reimbursement for alternative travel like train fare it could also include putting you up in a nearby hotel and Bed and breadfast for a night while you wait for your vehicle to be repaired.
  • European Cover:  Offers you breakdown cover when driving elsewhere in Europe than the United Kingdom. Temporary breakdown cover for driving in Europe is actually more commonly available than for the UK.  There are a range of single trip providers of European breakdown cover.
Whether you drive often or less frequently, having breakdown cover in place is a good idea, as if you do breakdown getting help to come to assistance at the road side can be far more costly if you don’t have a comprehensive level of breakdown cover.

Although what each provider will cover you for varies in general they can help you with many other aspects than just a mechanical fault with your vehicle, for instance they could help if you lock your keys inside the car or if you run out of fuel on your journey.

Car breakdown cover plans come in different forms but generally provide a home option whereby if your car is within a certain mileage from your home the breakdown company will provide assistance.

  • Roadside plans require normally that you are outside a certain distance from home and if the vehicle cannot be repaired then it will be towed to a garage within a certain distance.
  • More comprehensive plans will provide additional services such as transporting you to your intended destination, putting you up for the night in accommodation if necessary, and car hire. It is important that you understand what your breakdown plan is covering you for so there are no unexpected surprises if your vehicle breaks down.

You will also find that to incite customers many breakdown insurance providers offer special discounts and incentives throughout the years, therefore you may want to view what offers are currently available from the different providers before you make your decision.
