Motorbike insurance provider Be Wiser Insurance has issued a warning to seasonal motorbike enthusiasts to take it easy on the roads when they get their bike out for a new season.

Many motorcyclists put their bike away for the winter and get it out again in the Spring, and there are some risks that come with this when Spring comes around, the motorbike insurance provider warns.

Firstly, before taking to the road for the first Spring spin, bikers should carry out a few checks on their motorcycle, Be Wiser motorbike insurance suggest, such as checking tyre pressure, testing the brakes, and taking it easy with the throttle when they do get out on the open road, to avoid any unlucky incidents.

Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments: “Aside from the summer months, when the number of motorcyclists on the road is much higher, early Spring is the worst for casualties amongst bikers. Aside from the weather the biggest factors contributing to this are motorcyclists being a bit ‘rusty’ after a long winter break.”

The two most common factors contributing to motorbike accidents in 2008, according to the Department of Transport, are a failure to look properly and loss of control, Be Wiser reports.

Furthermore, motorcyclists are 57 times more likely to be killed or injured on the road than a car driver, Be Wiser warns, so they should be especially wary of cars on the road in the early Spring months.

Mr Bower-Dyke added, “Considering the car driver when taking your motorbike out for the first time this year is important. Car drivers get a bad press when it comes to spotting motorcyclists. A winter with motorcycle free roads compounds this situation. Just remember that the first time you’ve seen your bike this year might be the first time anyone else of the road has too!”
