Travellers Urged To Budget Their Gap Years

Phil Murray, director of independent advice service gapadvice.org, said many people are able to cover the costs of taking a year out without needing to rely on borrowing money from their family or friends.

People should try to work out their budget to include the cost of flights, insurance and other expenses, Mr Murray suggested.

“It makes sense to work out your daily, weekly, monthly costs and stick to it,” he commented.

However, an individual may choose to go over budget to do something that they may regret not doing when they return, he added.

According to gapadvice.org, the average amount spent by 18 to 25-year-olds on their gap years is between £3,000 and £4,000.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, recently said it was “essential” that people embarking on gap years consider insurance.
