Manchester United and Chelsea fans will be eagerly awaiting the Champions League final in Moscow on May 21, but should consider travel insurance to protect their trip.
M&S; Money is concerned that fans travelling to the country may overlook some basic financial details in the excitement of the moment.
According to the M&S; Money, 42,000 people from the UK will be visiting what it describes as “the world’s most expensive city”. The first ever all-English final will see thousands of fans travel, whether they have a ticket for the big game or not.
Football fans will be competing for hotel rooms and flights as they prepare themselves for the meeting of the top two premiership sides. Average hotel rates are approximately £236 and M&S; Money is warning fans that as Russian rubles can be difficult to come by, it is worth ordering currency well in advance.
It is also advising football pilgrims to get currency before they fly as high charges sometimes apply for withdrawing cash overseas. It also urges fans to make sure they are protected with an appropriate travel insurance policy, particularly if they are booking flights and accommodation themselves.
Meanwhile, many football supporters will be pleased to know that their team’s funds have been boosted by Britannia Building Society. Its customers have helped to raise almost £4.21 million for the thirteen football clubs linked with the company’s Save and Support scheme.
Thirteen Premiership, Championship and First Division clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Stoke City and Ipswich Town will benefit from bonuses based on the amount of money in the savings accountsand the number of supporters who have taken out a mortgage.
Clubs will use the funds to boost future development including putting money into their players’ academies.
Head of affinity relationships at Britannia, Peter Mansfield, said: “This is a huge amount of money, all generated by loyal fans.
“Our Save and Support accounts, in particular, are a great incentive for people of all ages to put some money aside and support their favourite club at the same time.”
