Take your thrills – but get covered for spills

12 June 2007
If you’re tempted into an off-the-cuff extreme sports experience while abroad, make sure you revise your standard travel insurance policy to cover you for mishaps, moneysupermarket.com has advised.

Half of British holidaymakers have indulged in impulsive daredevil sports while overseas, from a one-off white-water rafting adventure to a spur-of-the-moment bungee-jump, according to the website’s latest survey.

Jet-skiing has hooked in nine per cent of in-the-moment holidaymakers, while seven per cent have indulged in para-sailing and six per cent turned their hand to rock-climbing.

But too few people realise these high-risk activities could inflict heavy losses on their bank account if things go awry, warned Richard Mason, moneysupermarket.com’s director of insurance.

Standard travel insurance policies from market-leading insurers such as Norwich Union Direct, Marks & Spencer or the Post Office would not cover such activities, he claimed.

“Exclusions and caveats” in insurance policies are “commonplace”, he said.

Meanwhile, if you do upgrade to an ‘extreme sports’ or ‘adventure’ policy, you should always check the small print scrupulously to check you know what you are and are not covered for, say experts.
