So far today airports have been hit as Heathrow has been forced to close its runways, causing a number of suspended flights.

However, the ABI says that delays at snowbound airports are usually covered by travel insurance.

According to the ABI, cover under snowy circumstances usually starts after passengers have been delayed for a set period of time, the policy will then usually pay the cash amount for each subsequent time delay.

However, cancelled flights are unlikely to be covered, and because cover can vary, the ABI is urging consumers to check their policy details which will explain what is covered.

Similar advice is offered to homeowners whose property may be at risk of snow damage, as although snow damage may be covered under storm protection with building insurance, policies can vary.

And, as roads become treacherous under snowy conditions, the ABI is warning that although accidents caused by weather will be covered under comprehensive car insurance, breakdowns or failure to start will not, which is why the ABI is urging motorists to check their car breakdown cover.

Commenting Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI said: “Severe weather conditions cause great disruption and inconvenience, and insurance is there to help soften the blow.

“People who have suffered flight delays or damage to their home or vehicle due to the weather should contact their insurance company for advice.”
