According to Saga home insurance, the figures suggest that vigilant over 50s have increased their home security following numerous warnings of a crime wave brought on by the recession.

The news comes as Saga home insurance warns over 50s that June 6, which is this Saturday, is the day that Saga customers have made the most burglary claims in the past.

According to the over 50s specialist, June is a time when many over 50s are jetting off on their holidays just in time to beat peak time prices, while the longer nights are tempting many to go out in the evenings, leaving their homes empty and attractive to burglars.

Commenting, Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Group said: “If people are going away for a fortnight or just popping out for the evening, they should always check their property is as safe and secure as possible.

“A few simple steps will put off the opportunistic thief and could save the distress of returning to a ransacked home,” he added.
