Holidaymakers should look to take out insurance on their trip the moment it is booked, it has been claimed.

According to the Post Office, people may not receive their money back if their holiday is cancelled

If this were to happen, it may leave some with credit card debts.

This comes as Post Office Travel Services has found that nearly half of all holidaymakers do not take out holiday insurance when they go away, with 46 per cent calling it a waste of money and believing that they would not need it.

But John Howells, head of travel at the company, commented that taking out cover and making sure it is thorough is a worthwhile exercise.

“It may take a bit longer to ask these questions before you buy, but those few extra minutes could save you lots of misery not to mention thousands of pounds,” he said.

August is traditionally considered the most popular time for people to go away on holiday as the weather is often hotter and children are not in school.
