More than a third of Brits have had a holiday fling, and while most fizzle out, one in ten actually lead to wedding bells.

According to Moneysupermarket.com, 34 per cent of Brits have had a ‘romantic encounter’ on holiday, and while 47 per cent don’t take it any further than the end of the holiday, nine per cent end in marriage.

And it is the over 60s that are most likely to find true love abroad, with 22 per cent ending up married to their holiday fling.

While Londoners are most likely to have a foreign fling, it is holidaymakers from the south west that are most likely to go the distance, with 16 per cent tying the knot.

According to the statistics, Europe is the best place to go when looking for love, with nearly a third of holiday romances taking place on the continent. And there are no surprises with the top rated romantic getaway – Paris was voted the best place for a foreign fling.

“For all those looking for fun and love in the sun, the chances of a holiday romance look pretty good,” said Moneysupermarket.com’s Peter Gerrard. “It seems the over sixties are hopeless romantics and it’s great to know that you are never too old to find love.

“But, with all the excitement and anticipation of what your getaway may have in store, it is important to ensure that you have adequate travel insurance cover before you leave, wherever you are going,” he warned.

“Last minute cancellations, theft and unexpected medical treatment are all possibilities which can affect any of us and ruin what was looking to be a perfect holiday.

“Exclusions and caveats are commonplace so it is important to check the small print carefully. I advise Brits to plan ahead and shop around for the best value policy,” he said.
