Notes, photos speed up flood home insurance claims

28 June 2007
With the rampaging flood waters still causing severe damage and injury across the country, home insurance providers and other experts are warning homeowners to keep a check of what has been damaged.

Environmental engineering and risk management consultancy Ambiental has urged those affected by the heavy rainfall to take photographs around their homes and keep a note of what had happened to help when it comes to claiming money back.

Justin Butler, managing director of Ambiental, explained that the vast majority of home insurance policies will cover the cost of accommodation needed by those who have to leave their homes because of flooding, but that any extra details can help speed the process along.

He explained: “Firstly, you should contact your insurance company just to let them know what’s happening as soon as possible.

“It’s also helpful to record – using photographs, for example – how deep the flood water ingressed into your property.”

He said that keeping a note of where it came from and other details, such as the velocity of the flood water is important.

“All this information is very useful for the insurance companies,” he added.
