Halifax home insurance warning for big-spending parents

13 July 2007
Home insurance provider Halifax is urging parents to make sure they have double-checked their home contents insurance policies if they are planning on lavishing expensive nurseries and gifts for their children.

Research by the home insurance provider has found that British parents splash an average £2,628 turning their child’s nursery into an expensive and inspiring space.

Parents are increasingly spending money on hi-tech gadgets and decorations, from plasma TVs to signed football kits for the walls, in order to keep their children entertained or inspired in their nurseries or bedrooms.

However, the bank is warning that many parents are unaware of the importance of keeping their insurance firm aware of their new ‘upgrades’ and the effect they will have on their insurance policies.

Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: “Parents are spending almost half the price of a new car on their children’s home nurseries.

“Expectant parents bringing thousands of pounds of new items into the home should check their home insurance policy to ensure they have adequate cover.”

She said that policies that offer unlimited contents cover are ideal, as they can protect parents bringing expensive gifts into the home from “unwittingly contravening the terms of their policy”.
