Floods put 1.5 million cars ‘at risk’

02 August 2007
There are 1.5 million cars at risk of flooding in the UK, it has been reported.

If severe weather conditions were to hit them all, it would cost the car insurance industry £2.5 billion, according to uSwitch.com.

As a result, drivers at risk in flood hit areas may see premiums go up by 57 per cent, while some will struggle to pay repair costs if their policy does not stretch to cover the damage.

Arun Thompson, head of insurance at uSwitch.com, commented that Britons are taking chances by opting for cheaper, less comprehensive plans.

“If drivers do not take the necessary insurance precautions they could be suffering the financial consequences long after the flood water recedes,” he said.

People in the south of England have been particularly badly affected by the flooding.

However, it has been reported today that 98 per cent of homes across Gloucestershire have had their water supply restored within the last few days.
