Direct Line offers 50% off home contents insurance

09 January 2009 / by Rebecca Sargent
As the economic crisis takes hold, Direct Line is offering its new customers a recession-busting 50 per cent off its contents insurance.

According to the home insurance provider, Brits are beginning to feel the pinch when it comes to keeping up with household expenses, illustrated by the fact that 22 per cent believe it would be acceptable to default on their television subscription when times are hard.

However, Direct Line also found that home insurance is not something that Brits are willing to cutback on. Just one in 20 people said that they would lapse on payments for their home contents insurance.

Nevertheless, those who would cutback on this area could, according to Direct Line, equate to 1.2 million households having to pay out a fortune if they were to suffer a household disaster.

Commenting, Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, said: “Being pennywise when buying your policy could lead to being exposed when it comes to making a claim, if you’re left with not enough cover for your needs, or worse, with no cover at all.”

Commenting on the contents insurance discount he added: “We’re giving customers 50 per cent off their home contents insurance to show that it’s possible to get a good deal on home insurance and still feel safe in the knowledge that they are covered by a policy with enough cover to suit their needs.”
