The majority of UK motorists regularly break the speed limit, according to new research.

A study by insurer Direct Line Car Insurance has revealed that 94 per cent of drivers admitted to knowingly breaking the speed limit, with a third of young drivers (18 to 29 year-olds) doing it on a regular basis.

It also found that half of the motorists questioned were unable to identify the correct speed limit for a dual carriageway- 70 miles per hour.

Emma Holyer, Direct Line’s car spokeswoman, said: “The lack of knowledge amongst motorists is very surprising – particularly that so many don’t even know the speed limits on some UK roads.”

Direct Line has warned that not only is exceeding the speed limit dangerous and illegal, but that it can also be costly too.

Drivers caught travelling at 85 miles per hour on a motorway can be fined up to £2500 and get points on their licence.

Ms Holyer concluded: “Not only is speeding dangerous but as many motorists know to their expense, speed cameras exist across the UK and the points on your licence and fine incurred can be hefty.”
