Check your home insurance before sparks fly warns moneysupermarket.com

As 2.8 million Brits prepare to host their own firework displays this bonfire night, moneysupermarket.com has urged party holders to check their home insurance for personal liability cover.

According to moneysupermarket.com, the latest BERR statistics show that more than 6,600 people were injured as a result of fireworks between 2000 and 2005, 500 cases of which occurred at family or private parties.

Which is why moneysupermarket.com has reminded Brits that for as little as £123 a year, people can be covered for personal liability up to as much as £2,000,000.

Commenting, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, Peter Gerrard said: “Parties at home are of course a great way to celebrate the night but if someone burns their hand on a sparkler or on the bonfire, you could find yourself liable for any injury or damage if uninsured, and face a fairly hefty payout.”

According to esure, the number of Brits planning to hold their own party this bonfire night is almost three million, highlighting the need for adequate home insurance.

Head of risk and underwriting at esure, Mike Pickard added: “Fire is dangerous wherever it is but on bonfire night, the risks are magnified.

“Without personal liability cover, a valid claim could be pursued against the assets of any individual including their earnings, property or other possessions. If the organiser has failed to read instructions, ignored recommended ‘setting off’ distances or lit fireworks while inebriated, a claim could easily ensue – especially given the growing public awareness of the potential for litigation.”
