ABI advises public liability insurance

20 July 2007
Medical professionals are among the groups who have been advised to take out public liability insurance.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) advised those dealing with the public to ensure they have adequate cover in place, despite it not being a legal requirement.

ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said public liability is “absolutely” advisable for those working in the medical profession.

He explained that while any professional dealing with members of the public, where potential claims for damages can be high, would benefit from this time of cover.

“And [damages] don’t come much larger than medical negligence claims,” Mr Tarling said.

He added that public liability cover is advisable “anywhere where you’re dealing with people, certainly – and where you’re dealing with health issues, absolutely”.

The General Medical Council says doctors need to take out “adequate cover of professional indemnity”, but there is no legal specification that outlines minimum requirements.
