Remember, remember, home insurance protects on the 5th of November

Home insurance can help if things go up in smoke this Bonfire Night, industry experts are suggesting.

Bonfire night, with flaming Guy Fawkes, fireworks and sparklers, is a recipe for disaster, so insurance companies are urging households to have sufficient home insurance in place to protect themselves.

While the fifth of November can be an enjoyable night, for some people it is not only the fireworks that go off with a bang, and mishaps can lead to expensive damage being done.

Home insurance can offer peace of mind to hosts of fireworks parties, Confused.com suggests, providing cover not only for damage caused directly by bonfires or fireworks, but also for accidents caused by guests, such as breakages or spillage, injuries, and theft which occurs while the occupants are away at a fireworks display.

Confused.com also recommends that homeowners add public liability cover to their home insurance, which protects them against claims made by guests who are injured by falling, or being burnt.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said: “Although bonfire night is enjoyed by thousands, it is a dangerous night for many reasons. Being vigilant around fires and fireworks is a necessity to avoid accidents. One way of reducing the financial risk you expose yourself and home to, is to ensure adequate insurance is in place.”

He added: “We hope everyone has fun at this year’s fireworks, but also encourage people to look at insurance small prints to ensure Bonfire Night does not burn a hole in pockets, after they find out they are not covered for all eventualities.”

To avoid unnecessary damage this Bonfire Night, Co-operative home insurance is urging homeowners to take steps to protect their property and prevent accidents from happening.
“Each year, insurers receive reports of incidents from customers needing to make unexpected claims on their insurance as rogue fireworks and over-exuberant bonfires turned Bonfire Night enjoyment into an insurance headache,” the insurer said.

James Hillon, head of Co-operative home insurance, commented: “Whether you’re planning to just let a few fireworks off in your garden, or you’re holding a lavish firework party, it’s important that you check your insurance cover.”
