Consumers are concerned about paying their energy bills next month, following the freezing temperatures that have hit the UK in recent weeks according to Which?

In an independent survey, the consumer watchdog has found that 65 per cent of consumers are thinking more about their energy bills because of the recent cold weather, while 38 per cent said they were worried about paying their bills this month.

To cover the cost of their increased fuel consumption, some people confessed to dipping into their savings accounts, or even borrowing from their children’s savings, while others have cut back on spending in other areas, such as sacrificing gym memberships or holidays.

In a bid to keep future heating bills to a minimum, 57 per cent said they were wearing more clothes to keep warm instead of turning up the heat.

Commenting, Martyn Hocking, Which? editor, said: “There’s little choice but to turn the heating up when you’re faced with cold weather, so it’s inevitable that people are going to worry about their bills.”

However, Mr Hocking believes there are alternative ways to save money other than cutting back on heating, such as switching energy suppliers.

“Switching energy providers is quick and easy, and it can save you hundreds of pounds,” he said. “If you are already on the best tariff, you may be able to cut your bills further by taking a few simple steps, like paying by direct debit or on a monthly basis, or moving to an online account.”
