Offset mortgage costs on energy bills

11 May 2007
Although offsetting your carbon footprint is the current hot concept in eco-friendly circles, ordinary homeowners may need to offset the financial impact of the latest base rate rise, uSwitch.com has suggested.

Homeowners looking to displace the adverse effects of a quarter-point rise in mortgage repayments could find energy savings are the most effective way to cut their bills.

Energy costs are UK households’ third biggest expense, behind mortgages and council tax.

By switching energy provider, a consumer could save themselves £27 per month, or £325 across a full year, in view of the gap between the most and least expensive energy offerings on the market.

Since all six major suppliers announced price cuts, switching has become less of a gamble.

“Quick wins such as paying by direct debit, switching to dual fuel and taking up an online tariff could chip substantial amounts off the average energy bill,” uSwitch.com’s director of consumer policy Ann Robinson commented.
