BT superfast broadband to reach more users

BT has announced that it will be dedicating more funding to expanding its superfast broadband to reach more internet users.
In its final business results for the fourth quarter and year ending 31 March 2010, BT has announced “good progress” and has announced plans for the future, which include rolling out access to superfast broadband to a wider audience.
“We see the potential to roll out fibre to around two-thirds of the UK by 2015,” said Ian Livingston, BT chief executive. “This will take our total fibre investment to £2.5bn.”
“We have made good progress this year and have now set clear objectives for the next three years.”
Commenting on the news about BT broadband, Michael Phillips, product director at comparison and information website Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: “With Digital Britain plans somewhat sidelined during recent political events, it is encouraging to see BT pressing ahead to bring its superfast broadband network to more British consumers.”
The increased coverage might, he said, coincide with the London Olympics in 2012 which could widen the arena for viewers watching the events live online.
“As BT increases their superfast broadband coverage, we will be watching closely to see how much crossover there will be in the homes served by both BT and Virgin Media,” Mr Phillips added. “This will determine the real choice available to the consumers and competition at the superfast end of the market.”
