Public events are to be held by the Independent Commission on Banking to find the views of consumers, businesses on reforms to the UK banking system.

Five events will be held to hear the views of the public, businesses and other interested parties on the commission’s task of considering how to reform the banking sector to promote stability and competition.

An event will be held in Leeds on 19 November, in Edinburgh on 22 November, London on 2 and 13 December and Cardiff in early December.

The commission published an issues paper at the end of September outlining the issues it will be considering. More information is available on the http://bankingcommission.independent.gov.uk website.

The paper set out a series of reform options in relation to the structure of banks and markets, including the separation of retail and investment banking, narrow banking and limited purpose banking and reducing market concentration.

On the publication of the issues paper, chair Sir John Vickers said: “Experience shows that the risks from not asking hard questions about financial stability and competition are far greater than from doing so.

“Questions about the structure of banking need to be debated in an open, rational way, and we would like to invite anyone with an interest to provide us with views and evidence.”

Responses to the call for evidence in the issues paper should be made by 15 November.
