46% of investors strive for pure growth

03 September 2009 / by Rebecca Sargent

Almost half of investors are going for growth, the latest Question of the Month from Foreign & Colonial has revealed.

The asset management firm asked investors, ‘What is the aim of your investment?’, and 46 per cent of respondents said that they invest purely for growth.

Meanwhile, a mixture of income and growth was the investment objective for 39 per cent, while just 15 per cent said that they invest purely for income.

Some investors explained their strategies, one saying, “Income to spend – growth for inheritance for the children” while another said: “Holding my breath that the market continues to rise on the back of exiting the recession.”

The news comes during a low interest environment, when those close to retirement may be more inclined to invest for income, but as the survey was conducted entirely online, “it is possible it has captured a younger demographic, who are more likely to see growth from their investments.”

According to F&C, as interest rates remain at record lows, the dividend yields available on equities can provide an important boost for income seekers, while reinvesting dividends can also provide a boost for those looking for growth.
