That works out as a minimum of one breakdown every three years, with more than a quarter (28 per cent) of women suffering flat tyres most often as a reason for breaking down, and just under a third (32 per cent) of men complaining of a flat battery.

Neither male nor female drivers seem perturbed about running out of petrol, the survey found, with 39 per cent of motorists saying they don’t panic if their fuel gauge hits the red.

However, men are 50 per cent more likely to suffer a breakdown through running out of petrol than women, Direct Line discovered.

“Unfortunately as this research shows breaking down is inevitable at some point whatever car you drive,” said Emma Holyer, a spokeswoman for Direct Line Breakdown.

“It’s always best to get the professionals to help when you do have problems to ensure you get back on the road as quickly as possible.”
