Competitive home insurance deals available in flood risk areas

09 July 2008 / by Daniela Gieseler
One year after the devastating floods of last summer, home owners in flood risk areas are still left with several surprisingly good options to choose from when it comes to taking out home insurance, research from moneysupermarket.com found.

In a case study for Tewkesbury, one of the areas worst affected by last year’s flooding, the comparison website found that despite the increased and known flooding risk in the area homeowners with no previous claim for flooding are still offered competitive flood risk insurance and home insurance quotes from a wide range of insurers.

It’s a bit of a different story for flood risk victims who have already made a home insurance claim for flooding in the past, although not all seems lost. Although only three insurance providers – Halifax, Birmingham Midshires and Sainsbury’s – return higher quotes, these are on average only £8.61 more expensive than last year.

“Those living in high risk areas can take some reassurance from our research,” Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said.

“It is not all bad news – even if a claim has been made for flood damage, and only a handful of insurers will provide a quote – premiums remain incredibly competitive, highlighting the benefit of shopping around for your cover.”

Referring to the points raised in The Pitt Review published last month, Mr Gerrard said: “It is now up to the Government to provide a stronger and effective process to help prevent further flooding catastrophes and provide adequate funding for those affected; without this we may see an altogether gloomier picture and insurers may begin to hike premiums.”

He also urged homeowners to take no risks: “It is crucial for homeowners to ensure they have adequate insurance for their homes and contents, whether living directly in a flood risk area or not. If faced with a flooding situation the last thing you want is to find yourself underinsured or worst – not covered at all.”
